Dog Care Mistakes
May 12, 2022
Did you know that dogs are the most popular pet in the US? Almost 70 million American households include a canine companion. Most people are familiar with the basics of dog care. Like all of our other animal friends, Fido needs food, water, and shelter to survive. However, there are also many other nuances of dog care, which people can overlook. A local FM 1960 North Area vet lists a few common dog care mistakes in this article.

Not Enough Exercise

Just like us, dogs need proper activity to stay healthy. Every pup has different needs when it comes to their workouts, so you’ll want to ask your vet for specific advice on this. That said, Fido likely needs at least a daily walk.

Letting Fido Roam

One in three pets will go missing at some point during their lives. While there’s no way to completely guarantee that Fido will never slip out after some mishap, the chances are drastically reduced if you keep him leashed or in fenced areas whenever he’s outside.

Punishment

Fido is a very good boy, but he isn’t perfect. Sooner or later, he’ll do something wrong, whether it’s chasing the cat, chewing your shoes, or soiling inside the house. However, you should never punish him for these mishaps. Dogs don’t really understand the concept of punishment. Your pooch won’t understand why you’re angry, especially after the fact.

Overfeeding

We know, many people love to pamper their canine friends with yummy snacks. (Fido is also an expert beggar, but that’s beside the point.) However, that extra weight is definitely not good for your furry pal.

No ID

A microchip is very small, but it can have a tremendous impact on Fido’s life. If your four-legged buddy ever runs off, that tiny chip is his biggest chance of getting reunited with you! ID tags are equally important.

Lack Of Veterinary Care

We may be tooting our own horn here, but proper health care is a must! Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Lack Of Stimulation

Don’t let your pup get the Bored Doggy Blues! Daily walks are great, but Fido also needs entertainment. This can take many forms: toys, playtime, training, going to new places, and just interacting with you.
